Mail Time Learning: Turn Collecting the Mail Into a 10-Minute Activity

In just ten minutes, you and your child can gather the mail. Make the daily task of collecting your mail a learning adventure for you and your child.

If you retrieve your mail outside your house (at a mailbox on the street or at a central mail station for your apartment or community), walk to the mailbox together.

Make guesses about how many letters might be in your mailbox. If your mailbox is opened with a key, allow your child to use the key to open the box. Count how many pieces of mail you have. If you receive ads with photos, point to and talk about the pictures. If your child is working on school readiness skills, point to and identify the alphabet letters on the envelopes that are in your child’s name.
