10-Minute “Will It Float?” Science Game for Kids: A Simple Hands-On Sink or Float Activity at Home

activities for kids

In just ten minutes, you can play “Will it Float?” Walk around your house or yard with your child and gather several small waterproof objects.

Fill a large bowl with water and place it on your patio or front steps if it is warm enough outside or in your bathtub if it is too cold. Hold up the first object and make guesses with your child if you think the item will float in the bowl of water.

Put the item in the water and see if you are correct. Separate the items that float from the items that sink and talk about the two categories. If your child is working on school readiness skills, you could extend the activity by making a simple chart on a piece of paper and helping your child make a check mark under the word “Float” or “Sink” next to the name of each item.
