Kitchen Drum Session: A 10-Minute Music Activity for Kids

In just ten minutes, you and your child can drum together in your kitchen.

Head to the kitchen and pull out some pots, plastic containers, and wooden spoons. Turn the pots and containers upside down so the flat surface is facing up.

Give everyone participating a wooden spoon and then play around with rhythms by hitting the bottom of the pots and containers with the spoons.

See if you can all keep a beat together or see if one person can make up a rhythm for the other person to copy. Listen for the differences in sound made when you hit the surface of the metal pot compared to the sound made from the plastic container. This is a fun way to explore listening skills, imitation, and pattern recognition which are all foundational skills for future learning.
