The Floor Is Lava: A Fun 10-Minute Movement Game

screen free activities for kids

In just ten minutes, you and your child can play, “The Floor is Lava.” Grab a pile of blankets, towels, or pillows and bring them to the family room with your child.

Work together to spread them out on the floor, leaving small spaces between each item, wide enough to jump over, but not so wide that your child can’t make it safely. Once everything is set up, pretend the floor has turned into “lava.”

The only way to move across the room is by stepping on the blankets, towels, or pillows. Try different paths and challenge each other to get from one side of the room to the other without touching the “lava.” To add extra fun, turn it into a relay: place a small pile of toys on one side of the room and have your child carry them across one at a time, staying on the “safe” spots the whole way.
